Why the Restaurant Is Closed: Business Hours on Maps vs. Dianping
Google Maps, Apple Maps, and even local map apps often show outdated opening hours in Beijing. Here's how to cross-check with Dianping and Meituan before you set out.

Nothing derails a meal like arriving at 2 pm to find the kitchen closed. In Beijing, the hours listed on Google Maps or Apple Maps are frequently wrong — restaurants often update Dianping (大众点评) or Meituan (美团) instead. Treat map-app hours as a rough guide and always double-check before you go.
Why the Map Apps Get It Wrong
Google Maps has limited data partnerships in mainland China, so hours are often scraped from stale sources or crowd-sourced by few users. Apple Maps relies partly on AutoNavi (Gaode), which is better, but small restaurants still update inconsistently. Chinese apps like Dianping get hours straight from the businesses, since restaurants use those platforms for reservations and delivery — so that's where fresh information lives.
Google Maps — Often months out of date in China; fine for locations, unreliable for hours. Requires a VPN [verify before travel].
Apple Maps / AutoNavi (Amap) — Generally more current, but small eateries and new openings still lag.
Dianping / Meituan — Business-managed listings; the most accurate source for hours, menus, and whether reservations are needed.
Beijing Meal-Time Reality
Chinese meal times run earlier and shorter than many Western visitors expect. Lunch kitchens commonly close around 1:30–2 pm, and many restaurants shut entirely between lunch and dinner, reopening around 5–5:30 pm. Dinner service often winds down by 8:30–9 pm outside nightlife districts. Add holidays into the mix: during Chinese New Year, many family-run places close for days [verify before travel].
Lunch — Typically 11 am–1:30 pm; arrive by 12 to avoid the rush and the kitchen cutoff.
Afternoon lull — Many mid-range restaurants close 2–5 pm. Cafés and malls stay open.
Dinner — Peak 6–8 pm; popular spots stop seating or run out of signature dishes by 8 pm.
How to Cross-Check Before You Go
You don't need to read Chinese to use Dianping — a translation app handles most of it. Search the restaurant's Chinese name (get it from your hotel concierge or a translation tool), look for 营业时间 (business hours), and check the pinned reviews from the last few weeks; reviewers often note if a place has closed or moved. Meituan's delivery listings also confirm whether a kitchen is currently open.
Search the Chinese name — Ask your hotel front desk to write it down or screenshot it for you.
Look for 营业时间 — That's 'business hours' — match it against your map app and note any conflict.
Scan recent reviews — Reviews from the past 2–4 weeks are the fastest way to learn about closures or relocations.
Confirm booking rules — Popular restaurants may require reservations through Dianping/Meituan [verify before travel].
Sijiminfu (四季民福) — Roast Duck, Sanlitun Area
A hugely popular roast duck chain where hour inaccuracies bite hardest: it stops seating long before the listed closing time when the queue is full. Book ahead via Dianping if the app shows reservations available [verify before travel].
Metro
Sanlitun area; confirm current line and station name [verify before travel].
Opening hours
Typically lunch and dinner service with an afternoon lull; expect long queues at 6 pm [verify before travel].
Tickets
No entry fee; duck sets commonly run ¥150–300 (about USD 21–42) per person [verify before travel].
How long
1.5–2 hours including queue time.
Wangfujing Snack Street & Mall Dining
Street-stall hours are erratic and controlled by vendors; mall restaurants upstairs keep more reliable, posted hours. Dianping listings for individual stalls are hit-or-miss, so treat this area as flexible grazing rather than a fixed dinner plan.
Metro
Wangfujing station, Line 1 (confirm current line and exits) [verify before travel].
Free to wander; street snacks ¥10–40 (USD 1.50–6) each [verify before travel].
How long
1–2 hours.
Huguosi Snacks (护国寺小吃) — Old Beijing Breakfast
A classic spot for breakfast-style Beijing snacks, and a good example of hours that end early: food sells out or winds down well before many tourists arrive. Go in the morning and check the Dianping listing the night before [verify before travel].
Metro
Near Ping'anli station (confirm current line and station name) [verify before travel].
Opening hours
Typically opens early morning; expect early afternoon close or sell-outs [verify before travel].
Tickets
Snacks typically ¥5–30 (USD 0.70–4) each; pay via mobile wallet or cash [verify before travel].
How long
30–60 minutes.
